Well, call it temporary insanity, a celebration of surviving the last couple of years of crazy stuff or just fulfilling a promise to myself...

I'm off to pick up a new bike on Saturday.

I'll leave you to think about what it is, and post a picture of me with it after I get it.

Rumours around these parts have it that that Ducati is one of the best they have ever made , the only Ducat I ever got my hands on was a 998 fast good handling but I wouldn't have wanted to live with it mirrors were usles so easy to be way way over the limits speed wise , and if not giving it some too cramped, would love to have done a track day on it now that would have been fun , if you could get that feeling of dearnt drop this it would bankrupt me , enjoy look forward to hearing how you get on with it

Cool bike.  999 was not their best bike, styling-wise, but even a "controversial" Ducati style is nicer in person than many bikes.

Yeah, I know all the practical reasons not to get a finicky Italian bike, but I've simply always wanted one and the opportunity was there.  This one is almost Mr. Practical for a Ducati.  Wasn't really looking for a solo-seat, clip-on sport bike, so no Panagale.

This is more "sporty" than "sport" in today's parlance, but it is still beyond the performance of older "pure sportbikes" I've had.

I wasn't intending on going for the highest spec model, but they announced the "R" model for 2016, so all those of deep wallet and "latest and greatest" went for putting deposits on those.  This left left-over 2015 higher spec ones languishing on the showroom floor, so I was able to get a pretty good deal.

The Ohlins suspension will probably be nice once I get it setup, though.

The Ohlins in my experience are great once set up , just takes a bit of time to set though , depending how fussy you are or how hard you want to push it

Haven't seen JP in a while. Are we down to just the two of us? Laughing

Not going to be doing track days or the like with it (as far as I know anyhow), but my limited experience with upgraded suspension is that you can set up a firm, non-wallowey ride that is comfortable enough to actually absorb some bumps on the street.

yes you can adjust them to do all sorts of trickery , but it is surprising how some people can get all out of step with them and end up with a dog , like you say not heard from JP for a while I have his Email address will send him a email and try and see if he is ok

I'm not DEAD! Just dealing with 'stuff' that has so little importance, I know not what it was.
Why do we DO that?

I'm also dealing with wacky weather.

48 hours later...

...and yes, they are in the correct order.
Blowing a gale here tonight, blizzard in Quebec and +6C here. I was going to blame the Russians for monkeying with the weather, but they don't have enough money. Must be the Chinese!

AND NOW FOR THE IMPORTANT BUSINESS!

A MONSTER! Cool! I WANT one.
I was trying to talk the rotten little kid into getting that exact one instead of the Triumph Scrambler. Didn't work, and the Triumph has already moved on to the next owner.
I should really talk him in to a Multistrada for the type of riding around here though.
Smilo, you'll have to take the beast to some state that has roads and let us know what it is like!

Post by Smilodon Fri Mar 04, 2016 2:17 am

Eddy, I might have a pro help me set the suspension up (as I did with my track day bike). There are just soooo many adjustments and very little practical knowledge outside of those who do it regularly.

Hey JP, thanks for checking in.  Yeah, I know all about being busy!  I've only had riding the bike home and a nice weekend ride with the wife so far.

I do plan on sampling some better roads with it soon, but I am impressed with the few corners I've taken it on so far.

No real practical reason or excuse to get it.  I had big plans to get one a few years ago, and then life intervened.  So, when the stars aligned this time, I decided to go for it!

I haven't really had a sporty bike that the wife could ride on in a while, so she was happy to be able to ride on more of a "pure" bike (noisy, no bodywork, nimble) again.

I'm restraining myself from putting an exhaust system on it for a while.  It helps that the stock system is pretty cool sounding on its own.  But, not really looking for more noise, just less weight.

I have no complaints about the weather here, by the way.  Very mild and predictable here for the most part, atypical for this time of year.

Bike Week starts this weekend.  I only wish the racing was back up to the standards of the old days.  I really miss it.

Sow dawg! Absolutely LOVES the stuff. Also loves water, mud, dead squirrels, chicken poop, chunks of wood, digging holes, etc... Good thing we're in wild country.

Picture here in 'stealth mode'.

As to topic at hand though, I am amazed at the quality and variety of offerings from all the manufacturers this year. Nothing is left out. Every category ticked off. The prices are even 'reasonable'.
I really have no idea what I'd get if somebody was going to give me anything of choice. I suspect the only sure answer is multiple steeds. Not sure if I'll keep the Ninja. It's too good to leave just lying around. Maybe I'll trade it for an outboard motor and finally put the old hydroplane back in the water... That would be a worthy sacrifice.

Taken in the late 60's on the St.Lawrence River. Yes... I STILL have it! I never get rid of anything!

That looks perfectly safe... What with that life jacket and all... Not to mention you have the fuel tank to protect you when it noses in. What could go wrong?

Ummm. Yeah, well... See that big boat in the background? Well, we used to jump the wake with the hydroplane. Lots of fun! Tried it one fateful day with a small Canadian Navy destroyer that was going somewhere. Different wake. Launched off the top of the first wave at full tilt (40 MPH), no idea there was a second one coming. Little boat went directly into the front of a 8' wave. Did not know until then that gas tanks can float. Motors do not. Life jackets save lives. Wooden boats can be re-floated. New motors are expensive on a 17 year old's wage packet. Crying or Very sad

A friend and I used to go to Disney, stop off at one of the hotels and rent little one-man (two if you are really friendly) boats (one each) and race them around the substantial waterways around the parks.

They were heavily governed motors, but that was easily remedied with the proper tools (which we were carrying).

Lots of fun running around, racing and jumping the wakes of the big boats ferrying the tourists from the parking lot into the park.

These were little tri-hull fiberglass thingies, but your wake jumping story made me think of it.

This came to an end in a way that taught me "Disney logic".  You had to wait in line for the boats, and often had to sit around until one came back in".  This caused sad faces, and nobody was spending money during that time.

They didn't want more boats in the lagoon, since they got difficult to ride herd on.  So, they just kept *doubling* the price of the boats until the crowd got in line with the number of boats (with a few sitting in the docks).

The folks who said "that's too expensive", walked away and had fun somewhere else, where they were likely spending money...

That water looks far too deep for me , I will stick to keeping my feet on solid ground , or a bouncy pair of foot pegs , first run out for me the Easter Egg charity run with the same biker cafe boys and girls in two weeks time , will be on the little Stinker again , good fun they are saying between 5 and 8 hundred of us , but think that will depend on the weather a lot drop out if it looks like rain , once I get it in my head that I am going I go , for me to back out it has to be bad ,

and you can keep that white stuff we dont get much of it these days thank goodness as we are just not set up for it

Had a big giggle at the IOM road cameras yesterday. Garry was on about closing roads and horrendous driving conditions... I checked in to see the equivalent of what we here in the Great White North would call a 'light dusting'. Not worthy of the morning news report. Snowblower would have stayed in the garage. Not even enough accumulation to provide 'sporting' conditions.

Wimps!

Mind you, it helps that I have whopping great lugs on my car's snow tires that look more like motocross than dual-purpose patterns...tongue

The problem we have over here with snow is that we get that little of it we don't kit up for it we don't get Snow tyres for cars any more even 4x4 s run low profile soft compound tyres as much good in snow as racing slicks in a down pour of rain , as for snow chains very few people would know what they were , so just the slightest bit of the white stuff and it is chaos ,

All this stuff fell on March 5, and it's pretty well all gone already. No sea ice this year either. Pretty hard to discount global warming conditions around here!

Mind you, because of the snow, I spent an enjoyable (?) few hours sorting out screws and nails that had gotten all wet from a roof leak in the garage (blizzard last week blew snow under some flashing).

If you feel the need to label something, put a bike related sticker on it instead. Works for me and provides an outlet for the pallet of Bushy's stickers I brought back from my TT trip.

Oooo... Coke "button" sign. Looks like the real deal too, cool...
