this years TT
What a mixed bag it has been with more highs and lows than you could shake a stick at , 5 riders lost their lives , lap records tumbling , accusations of bikes not meeting the regs , bad behavior from visitors and locals alike , the standard of driving and riding was abysmal and in many many areas down right dangerous according to police and some of my friends that were there ,
we have booked up to go over for the Southern 100 next month we go over on the 6th of July and come home on the 20th , the racing is practicing on the 11/12/13 th evenings and the racing on the 14th leaving us plenty of time to enjoy the Island and catch up with our Manx friends .
I am going on my own to Scarborough this next weekend for the two day Cock O The North meeting , I just hope and pray there are no red flag incidents , I love the roads racing but am struggling with death rate the way things are I have been thinking long and hard , is it time turn my back on the roads racing and concentrate on short circuit racing with run offs and paramedics on every corner , something I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever consider let alone actually do , time will tell

Re: this years TT
Yeah, it was a bad year for fatalities this year. I've not heard about the other stuff, having just finished watching the senior on TV last night.
I'm pondering which event I'll attend next year, if at all (there are other possibilities for holidays to consider). Thinking about the "classic" TT rather than the "big" TT.
I think the "big" TT is going through a big popularity cycle right now, and may of the side-effects are probably more to do with that than anything.
It also seems to have swelled the entries into the races themselves. Not sure if that has anything to do with the rise in fatalities, but regardless.
But, even in MotoGP, bikes can be dangerous...

Yes we know all forms of motorsport are dangerous and it will always happen that people will pay the ultimate price , and I have been a big supporter for many many years and as you know a marshal for 9 of those years not only at the TT , but the amount of off's at short's where riders come off and would have been dead had it been on roads is unquestionably vast , I remember Joey once saying that on the roads you rode with a 10% margin for error he didn't mean you went 10% slower what he meant was you stayed 10% further away from street furniture , but todays riders are pushing to the very edge of the road right up to and sometimes up on to the kerbs , and saying they don't care if they die , I find that mind set hard to justify and come to terms with , it is turning a sport in to a game , a game of Russian roulette , and that is not a thing I am sure I want to be part of , it is not a decision I am finding easy to make , it is tearing me to bit's ever time a rider is taken from us , hopefully a couple of incident free events will get me back on track , the older I get the softer I become , Silly Old Fart

Re: this years TT
When we had our ill-fated attempt at starting a TT version here in Cape Breton, the organizers were quite frank about death being a possibility for competitors and even spectators. Those not sure of any sporting event held on public roads were even more aghast, and ran screaming from the meetings. Kudos to the organizers for not shying away from the reality though.
The unpredictability was a factor in the government backing away. We had secured adequate insurance and financial backing. The provincial government was not going to let any possible scandal through in a voting year, so the plug was pulled.
I must admit, that every time I rode the 'track', I wondered how I would feel as an organizer, if I knew someone had died or been seriously injured on this corner, or that straight, or that bump.
I'll never know now, but in a way I'm glad I never had to take responsibility...
I have lost a little of the urge to attend the TT, mostly because of the tales of fan misbehavior. The 'Classic' would suit my schedule better, and I'll miss not seeing the 'big guns', but I think that will be my plan. 2017?? Retirement is looming, so maybe...

Re: this years TT
for me the Classic was not a success it spoilt what was a great event , and in the never satisfied search for more and more money at both events the overspill from the TT ( people that could not get to the TT so go to the classic as a alternative ) are making so much of the classic as badly behaved as the TT , and with the amount of breakdowns leaving you sat for hrs looking at a blank piece of tarmac for what felt like hrs , just didn't cut it for me ,
Wee have just altered our booking for the Southern to go out on the Monday instead of the Wednesday so we will be there for Tynwald day at St Johns a historic handing over of power to the government house of Keys or something like that , we have fancied going for years but never got round to it , but after we booked for the Southern the boss as she often does went on the net to see if anything was going to be on and found that it was on the day before we had planed to go so we have contacted the Racket and got the booking brought forward to allow us the time to go , sound job looking forward to it

Re: this years TT
I guess I haven't been keeping up. Don't they still have "modern" bike races at the "classic" TT as well (like they did at the Manx), or is it just authentic "old" stuff?
I was kind of hoping it would have a little of each, so you could still see a modern bike whizzing around a few days out of the week...

Re: this years TT
yes they do have the Manx newcomers and the light weights I dont know it just didn't float my boat some how from the first time they ran it and lasdt year we went over for the middle weekend and by the Tuesday it was dead no atmosphere it was boring I felt that the Jurby day was the best bit I did enjoy that , it will be a long time before I go again if ever , I just hope that the Southern lives up to expectations , if it is any where near as good as others say then that will be the way forward for me , if not I will hopefully go just to visit when nothing is on as I or I should say we do love the place just to spend time there relaxing seeing Manx friends

Re: this years TT
Ha! Going to the Isle of Man to see something other than racing! Imagine that?
Actually, several years ago, we had just started booking to go over with Festival of Speed friends. Things went south for us and we cancelled everything, but we were arranging to stay at a B&B farm so we could play with the sheep and see what farming was like on the other side of the pond. We had tours planned for both ends of the island, the tram, etc... For SWMBO the races were only a slight diversion in the trip... Scotland was for week three...
