TT and its future... Empty TT and its future...

Post by gary the nurse Tue Jun 11, 2013 9:52 am

OK so you all know me and have known me for a while-so you know I ain't stirring or trolling and you know I totally support all 2and3 wheeled motor sport especially the TT etc
But am wondering what everyone's thoughts are re the bray hill incident on senior race day
I am asking cos I am curious and yes I have seen al sorts of speculation and gossip and if its to be believed everyone on the island was there and they all have an opininon!

But one thread on another forum made me pause and think-i will post the link on here-manxforums has a lot of anti-TT brigade members on it but there are some who are for it too...the TT thread this yr was its usual drivel but please read it all...1 member who posts is a guy called wrighty-now this guy is 1 of the orthopaedic consultants who was on shift that day-please read all of it have a think and then maybe let's all discuss!

It looked like just a bunch of name calling.
When you arrive to the IOM there are postings that motorbike road racing is dangerous and you accept the risks as a racer and or spectator when you attend the TT
It truly was a sad event of happening when the 11 people were injured.
I see nothing wrong with the event continuing
That's just my 5 cents worth.

Everyone is surely aware of the danger to spectators at the T.T. especially if you chose to be at one of the many very high speed locations? Still that's what I go there for, just the sight and sound of man and machine going past me at any speed over 150, and I actually feel the pressure as man and macine go by. For me that IS the T.T.

as I under stand it the Police put it down as a racing incident and did not use the accident investigation unit so that will make it difficult for any one to apportion blame to any one , having said that obviously the powers that pee will have a risk assessment done of the area and come out with some funny stuff from the rear end of a bull as usual

Sorry, I started to read, but it goes on and on (19 pages at the time I read), and I don't have time right now.  I'll try and have a look later and comment on any specifics in that thread.

But in general, the risk for spectator injury is always there and cannot be removed due to the nature of the race.  Reasonable precautions are provided.  There are specific locations provided for race viewing for people who want to spectate, but do not want to take that risk.

Many who spectate are motorcycle riders who choose to take some risk for this activity.  It is not a mystery to these people that such things can happen, but you participate anyway.  It is an odd way of thinking in this age, and that is what makes the TT the worldwide phenomenon that it is.

As far as the people with houses on the course, well, the course was there before you got your house.  My understanding is that houses on the course are not cheap, partially due to their location.

What I am saying is that it is obvious that a decision was made to put yourself in the position for such a thing to happen.  Much like those who move near an airport and then spend the rest of their days lobbying to have the airport closed down.

I'm sure many here would gladly take a house on the course off of somebody's hands!

There is a certain logic to controlling the populace for their own good.  It generally leads to lives barely worth living.

I'm certainly not unfeeling for those who got hurt, and realize that it could have been worse.  It is no different to other friends who have died or been seriously injured in motorcycle incidents at, or away from, the TT.

I wish them all the best.

'Yellow Journalism' as they say... and you're right Gary, buddy is just fishing with his 'well researched' article (Googled current stats and picked the juiciest)...
Same and worse injuries in US stock car racing and Indy, even with 75' high fences and the like.
Thing is though, one ass-hole looking for a bi-line on a cheap story can do a lot of harm when the old ladies get a hold of the story. It didn't take much to cave-in our TT attempt. Just a few misinformed rumors led to hysterical panic-mongering.
Every car race ticket sold in the US and Canada has a 'It ain't our fault if you's gets kilt!' message printed on it. Even hockey game tickets warn of errant pucks!
This type of thing killed pro-rallying locally. Lawyers insinuating that potential injured spectators had not paid for tickets and therefore were not aware that standing 5' away from racing cars on gravel roads might be dangerous.
We had a woman try to sue the place I work because she fell off her 5" stilettos in the parking lot. She claimed the surface was uneven. The fact that she was tottering across a massive parking lot with 100's of cars and trucks, construction carts and forklifts, and that it was raining did not deter her from claiming it was not HER fault!
It is always everybody else fault these days.

Yep definitely was a bunch of name calling and yes very long-mostly filled with guff!
And totally agree re everyone knows biking and motor sport is dangerous...wonder if the term can be change ie smoking-motorsport can be fatal/end your life etc...
Definitely part of the TT buzz IS being so close to the action!
Yep police are saying no investigation as race accident but acu are investigating and have said there won't be any knee jerk reaction which is good!and now some witnesses are coming forward with their stories now which the Press are gobbling up!
My main discomfort moment is how wrighty describes how the hospital were consulted and the lesser of 2 evils decision and then how either way that'd impact on the TT and island...
,y thoughts remain as ever with those who were injured

"Class" is a real limited commodity these days.  If it were me, I'd like to think I would come forward only to say that it was my risk, and I wouldn't change a thing, without dramatizing my injuries.

I guess that is easy to say when I haven't been injured, but I remember sitting on the stairs at exit of the Gooseneck a few TTs ago (which is closed now, except for a few marshals), and knew damn well the danger.  The thought did run through my head at the time, so I was not doing it in ignorance.

Not to mention all those "motorsports are dangerous" signs, a copy of which hangs in the jumbo garage.

I like to think that when ever I go to any where at a motor sport or any other event come to that I look at the area and do my own risk assessment and stand sit or what ever in what I think is acceptable to ME and if not I will move on even when marshaling if I am not happy then I am gone and as such I accept responsibility for my own actions

Now that's an original thought, being responsible for your own actions. I thought that every f8ck up or mistake was somebody elses fault???
